A man collapses in front of us
His name is Richard, and he
Has drunk too much
Head in a drain, shit on his coat,
He listens to classical music
He likes Mozart best
All this we ask as we wait for help
The paramedics arrive in their rescue vehicle
straight out of 80’s children’s TV
‘Ah yes, okay’ and knowing looks
Automatic motions
As we wonder whether to leave
‘Thanks guys’
And they are done with us,
Though he stays with me
I see him often on the same path
Knowing his face silently
Looking away to preserve his pride
